VFR Over the Top Rating
A VFR Over The Top rating enables the holder to exercise the privileges of their licence above a solid layer of clouds in Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC), in accordance with Visual Flight Rules (VFR), this is flying by using visual references outside the aircraft.
This program has been approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.
Minimum Program Outline as per Transport Canada
This program outline is based on the minimum requirements set by Transport Canada. Candidates may require additional training to reach the required level of safety and proficiency.

1. Prerequisites
- Licensing
- Applicants must hold a valid license which can be endorsed with VFR Over the Top rating by Transport Canada.
- The license must be accompanied by the appropriate medical category using which the licence is maintained.
2. Knowledge Requirements
- An applicant for a VFR OTT rating shall acquire a standard of knowledge in accordance with the Flight Instructor Standard – VFR OTT.
3. Experience Requirements
- An applicant for a VFR OTT rating shall complete a minimum of 15 hours dual instrument time of which a maximum of 5 hours may be instrument ground time. Training shall be in accordance with the Flight Instructor Standard – VFR OTT.
4. Skill Requirements
- An applicant for a VFR OTT rating shall have reached the level of skill specified in the Flight Instructor Standard – VFR OTT.
